Everett Company Stage School "Breaking Down Science"

On Friday, May 25th, the entire student body enjoyed an amazing performance presented by the Everett Company Stage School, entitled "Breaking Down Science". This interactive performance (using fun props like gigantic tops, a hover-craft, a four football and indoor kite) explained the scientific method and taught students about wave motion, friction, Newton's laws of motion and center of gravity, and how it all applies to the twists, spins and flips of breakdancing. The Penny Challenge fundraiser funded this incredible and entertaining educational program. Thank you!

4th Grade Second Annual Comic Con

Grade 4 Second Annual Comic Con was a great success today.  Despite a very busy day and last minute adjustments to comics and costumes, the kids had a wonderful culminating event.    While the project itself was a learning experience in reading, writing, and public speaking, the learning was masked by the fun of developing their own characters, setting, and plot within their comics.  The teachers would like to thank the parents for supporting our fourth grade authors and artists by visiting several comic heroes in our own Howe-Manning Hall of Justice.  We would also like to thank our students for all the hard work they put in, and to the staff for dropping by to visit and help out as well.

Senior Citizen 5th grade Pen Pal Visit

This year fifth grade teacher, Mr. Pascucci, set his homeroom students up with senior-citizen pen pals from the Beverly Council on Aging, where his wife works as the Assistant Director.  The students were assigned a pen pal and wrote letters back and forth about every other week.

On Thursday, May 24th, the students and seniors had a chance to meet in person when the seniors came to visit.  The students took their pen pals on a tour of the new school, shared pictures and other personal items, looked at a slide show of pictures, and sat and talked.  It was a great chance to talk and be with the seniors and everybody really enjoyed it.

Recycled Art Contest

The Environmental Committee of the Student Council held the first recycle art show for Howe-Manning.  The first step we took was brainstorming ideas we could come up with that could make people realize that recycling is very important, then we decided we would do a recycle are show.  We got the message out to people, and we got 6 submissions.  Even though the number of submissions was very low wwe got the message across to people to recycle.  Maybe next year they will have more submissions if the Student Council will decide to do it again.

SunAWARE

The fifth and sixth grade students viewed a presentation from the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation on Monday, May 21st about sun safety. They learned that New England has the highest prevalence of skin cancer in the country and that all types of skin can become burned by the sun. Everyone should protect their skin from March through October especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Tanning (indoors or outdoors) is never healthy, it is skin damage. A wide-brimmed hat is one of the best ways to protect from the sun’s rays. Sun screen of SPF 15 or greater should be used and reapplied every 2 hours. Visit the foundations website http://www.melanomaprevention.org/ for more information. The Friday before Memorial Day weekend is celebrated as Don’t FRY Day. It is a great time to let your kids educate you on all the sun safety tips they learned during the program.

Mira Plante - Letters to Literacy

Congratulations to fourth grade student, Mira Plante.  She recently placed first in her division at the state level in the Letters to Literacy sponsored by the Library of Congress. Mira did a fabulous job representing our school. Her letter was superbly written and she read it at the awards ceremony with poise beyond her years.  Congratulations to Mira’s teacher, Mrs. Deeley, as well.
