Math in Focus Parent Informational Night

Approximately 80 parents attended the Math in Focus Parent Night at Fuller Meadow School last night.  The presentation included the philosophy behind the program, specific examples of how concepts are taught and how parents can support their children at home.
Some suggestions that were made include:
·         Resist the urge to “show how”
·         Ask questions that probe at meaning
·         Allow children to struggle
·         Encourage persistence
·         Praise effort
·         Set the timer (for the allotted time for math homework)

International Talk Like a Pirate Day!!

Fourth graders read biographies of famous pirates. They practiced comprehension strategies using a story titled “Talk Like a Pirate” and read a variety of pirate books to learn how to write with pirate voice (voice is one of the six traits of writing that fourth graders will incorporate into their work this year). In social studies, fourth graders studied maps. Today, they looked at different kinds of maps: climate maps, resources maps, physical maps, political maps, road maps and….of course….treasure maps! In science children followed the steps of the scientific method to design and build pirate ships increasing the amount of weight they could hold.  All in all it was an aaarrrrrllllright day!!!!
