6th Grade Land Yachts

Grade Six Math: The sixth graders have used the engineering design process and their math skills to create Land Yachts.  The skills needed to complete the task included measurement, orthographic drawings, calculating speed, calculating with decimals, and problem solving.  Students were instructed to design, build, and test a Land Yacht to travel at least 300 centimeters when placed in front of a box fan.  Friday, June 1, 2012 was Race Day!  There were many fun themes and designs from Hawaiian to the Celtics.  Max Streng, Josiah Burns, and Jack Bresnahan had the second greatest distance travelled at 1,460 centimeters.  Jack Bresnahan had big shoes to fill with his older brother Tom having the all time record of 1,700 centimeters two years ago.  Our furthest distance this year, was 1,490 centimeters by Jack Hurton and Harrison Brickett’s “Legends” land yacht.   We are proud of all our sixth graders for meeting the challenge.  Good Work.
